If you suffer from gum disease, then it’s important to treat it as soon as possible. This is because gum disease is one of the most serious and dangerous dental issues in the world today. In fact, it can result in loose and lost teeth if it’s left untreated. There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. There are treatments available to treat each stage. Our dentist, Dr. Patrick L. Huston, DDS, MSD, is happy to tell you all about them. Those treatments are:

For Gingivitis

-Dental checkup (The cleaning treatment provided at your regular appointments remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline, which can eliminate the gingivitis and restore your oral health.)

-Pristine oral hygiene (It’s very important to clean your teeth and gums regularly by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash once a day.)

For Periodontitis

-Scaling and root planing (This involves scraping the plaque and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces and then smoothing out the root to prevent bacteria buildup.)

-Pocket reduction treatment (This involves cleaning the gum pocket, folding the gums back, smoothing out the damaged bone, and promoting healing in the gums and well as gum reattachment to the teeth.)

-Gum grafts (This involves taking tissue from the palate of the mouth and securing it over the tooth roots where the gums have receded.)

-Bone grafts (This involves eliminating the bacteria in the area and then placing a natural or synthetic bone along with tissue-stimulating proteins in the jaw.)

-More frequent cleaning appointments (Checkups every 3-4 months will help you keep gum disease at bay.)
