The American Dental Association advises everyone to brush their teeth twice each day with a quality toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. This should then be followed up by thoroughly flossing between each of your teeth and along the gum line at least once each day. Make sure to also clean the area behind each of your molars.
If plaque, tartar, and bacteria are not removed from your teeth and gum line, your gums will swell in response. This will allow more plaque to reach below the gum line, which is known as periodontal or gum disease. This initially manifests as gingivitis which could cause your gum tissues to appear inflamed and bleed easily when performing your daily oral hygiene routine. It could also cause chronic problems with bad breath. If you have started to notice any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment to see our periodontist, Dr. Patrick L. Huston, DDS, MSD. Our periodontist may be suggest a deep cleaning, or something as simple as strengthening your oral hygiene routine.
If your gingivitis is left untreated, it could gradually develop into a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. This could have a profound negative effect on your gum tissue. In time, chronic gum disease could weaken the roots of your teeth leading to multiple cases of tooth loss.
If you live in the Tustin, California, area and you have gum health concerns, you should call 714-795-3117 to schedule your appointment at OC Advanced Periodontics.
