JAWBONE GRAFTING: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Maybe you are missing a tooth, and your jawbone is too thin or soft to support a dental implant. Or perhaps you suffer from gum disease and your jawbone has been weakened. It may be time for a bone graft. If your dentist has recommended a bone graft or you would like to learn more about this possibility, here are a few common FAQs:

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft is a type of surgery wherein a portion of bone material is spliced onto a particular bone on your body in order to strengthen it. When dentists, periodontists, or oral surgeons talk about bone grafts, they are almost always referring to your jawbone.

Where does the bone come from?

Many oral surgical offices use cow bone as grafting material, but here at OC Advanced Periodontics in Tustin, California, we prefer to use bone from another part of your jaw, as this tends to bring the best results. We can also use artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank if circumstances call for that.

How long can I wait before my dental implant?

It depends. If you only need a minor graft, you might be able to get the dental implant at the same time or shortly after your bone graft. If the graft is more substantial, the new bone will need time to heal and fully unite with your original jaw to the point where it can support the implant. That can take up to several months. Dr. Patrick L. Huston, DDS, MSD can give you a more personalized estimate.
