BONE GRAFT SURGERY REBUILDS JAW STRUCTURE

It’s not uncommon for things like gum disease, advanced tooth decay, deep fractures, or tooth extractions, to result in a loss of bone structure in your jaw. If you are going to be fit for dentures, a partial or a dental implant, your dentist or periodontist might recommend bone graft surgery to restore the structure of your jaw.

The first step in the process involves an oral surgeon or periodontist examining your mouth and taking some X-rays. This gives them a clear understanding of how much bone structure is available as well as other factors that might be involved. Be sure to let them know about any medical conditions or medications you are taking.

Bone graft surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis, requiring deep sedation. You will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you and help you get back on your feet.

The bone graft material is usually sampled from your chin or if you prefer it can be taken from a surgical cadaver. The surgeon will make an incision in your gums, to gain access to the jaw bone. The graft is placed and the gums are sutured closed.

In time your body will integrate the graft into your existing bone structure. Your recovery time will vary depending on your age, overall health and quality aftercare. If you use tobacco it will irritate the gum tissues, which increases recovery time and risk of infection.
